Why pensioners are supporting our DECC fuel bill assembly…

Several pensioners’ organisations are supporting our DECC fuel bill assembly on Saturday 16th February. Here’s the NPC and the GLPA on why they’re taking to the streets with us…

From the National Pensioners’ Convention

As Britain’s biggest pensioner organisation, the National Pensioners Convention (NPC) is calling on the government to introduce a 3 point plan to tackle the scale of winter deaths and fuel poverty amongst older people. Every year tens of thousands of older people die needlessly from the cold, yet the government seems incapable of tackling the problem. Ministers need to take this scandal seriously and introduce a 3 point plan that increases the winter fuel allowance to £500 for every pensioner household, expands the programme of insulation and energy efficiency measures across the country and prevents the big six energy companies from making excessive profits from vulnerable customers. At least 3m pensioner households are currently in fuel poverty and every time there’s a 1% increase in fuel bills a further 8000 people join the ranks of the fuel poor. For too long successive governments have simply tried to ignore this issue, but no civilised society would allow this to keep happening. We need action from government now.’

From the Greater London Pensioners’ Association

The Greater London Pensioners Association is now in its 40th year and over that period of time it has been at the helm of activities in support of the Pensioners of Greater London.

In today’s situation of harsh, extreme austerity, cuts to the elderly and other sections we now see the urgent need for unity of all those affected by the welfare cuts imposed by the present government.

It is for that reason that the GLPA is giving its support to the demonstration at the Dept of Energy and Climate Change on Saturday Feb 16th to register our resistance and opposition to the fuel poverty suffered by so many thousands in Britain.’

  1. Pensioners frequently face a stark choice – go hungry or go cold. We need to organise ourselves to fight back against these injustices.
